Trust Governors

From 3rd September 2010, a number of schools in North Tyneside became Foundation Schools with a Trust (Trust Schools). The Trust that supports them is the North Tyneside Learning Trust.

While the schools will continue to be maintained by the Local Authority, this new status gives the governing bodies more ‘freedoms’ to innovate and work in greater partnership with each other and with local partners.

As part of the role of partner, organisations can appoint employees to become Foundation Governors on any of the Trust schools. Each school will have two places which can be filled by Trust Governors.

Trust Governors will join the other four categories of governors, i.e. Parent, Staff, Authority and Community Governors to make up the membership of each governing body. While enjoying equal status with other categories, Trust Governors will be able to shape and influence the improvement of education for children in North Tyneside. They will be able to fulfil the three core elements of school governance, which are:

  • Strategic view,
  • Critical friend, and
  • Accountability

In a nutshell this means defining the strategic direction for the school, challenging its leaders and celebrating its achievements as well as being accountable to stakeholders for the decisions made.
